The goddesses
The first goddess is the Maiden, which is represented by a new waxing moon. They are characterized as a person who shows youth, creation, pleasure, and new beginnings. The maiden is also a person who wants you to explore your spirituality, creativity, and desires. Lettie is a perfect example of this type of goddess because of the way she shows all of these characteristics throughout the book. The way she shows her youth throughout portrays this goddess.
The second goddess is the mother, which is represented by the full moon. They are characterized as a person who shows love, fertility, and nourishment. Ginnie shows all of these qualities caring for her daughter throughout the book. Especially when Lettie was taken by the ocean is when she showed how much and how true her love for Lettie was.
The last goddess is the Crone, which is represented by the fading waning moon. They are characterized by wisdom, endings, and fulfillment. Old Mrs. Hemstock shows this well the way Lettie and Ginnie look up to her throughout the book as a person they knew had wisdom. She was still teaching them her tricks and all. She shows the "endings" by knowing eventually Lettie was going to die but she also knew that she would be back.
